Butchaiah Chowdary quits as TDP general secretary

Vijayawada, April 3: Peeved over being left out in Sunday’s cabinet expansion, senior leader of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) G. Butchaiah Chowdary has resigned from party post.

Stating that he is pained over the recent developments in the TDP, he resigned as the general secretary of the party.

Chowdary is a member of Andhra Pradesh state legislative assembly from Rajahmundy rural constituency.

He alleged that the party loyalists and those who made sacrifices are being ignored. He said as a fifth time legislator he had hopes of getting a cabinet berth.

Chowdary expressed concern over the party rewarding defectors. He was referring to induction of three YSR Congress party MLAs in the cabinet.

The MLA pointed out that the party used his services during many crises.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu Sunday expanded and reshuffled his cabinet. He inducted 11 new ministers including his son Nara Lokesh, who is also the TDP general secretary.

Naidu dropped five ministers and inducted 11 to take the strength of his cabinet to 26.

The rejig, however, triggered dissidence in the party. B. Gopalakrishna Reddy, who was dropped from cabinet along with four others, resigned from the state assembly. He sent his resignation to Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao and the chief minister.

Another MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar, who was ignored in the expansion, also announced his resignation.

Senior leader D. Narendra also voiced his displeasure over being left out. He is under pressure from his supporters to quit to send a strong message to the leadership.

Bonda Uma, the MLA from Vijayawada, too threatened to resign. MP Kesineni Nani and others intervened to pacify him.

What has caused heartburn among the strong contenders of cabinet berths is the induction of three MLAs who were elected on YSR Congress party ticket but were rewarded for switching loyalties.

Akhila Priya, Amarnath Reddy and Adinarayana Reddy were inducted from among 21 YSR Congress MLAs who defected to TDP.

Akhila Priya is the daughter of Bhooma Nagi Reddy, a TDP MLA, who died last month. Naidu had allegedly lured them last year with the ministerial berth. Following sudden demise of Bhooma, Naidu decided to make his daughter a minister.
