Cutting across the party lines, the MPs from Andhra Pradesh are indulging in well-orchestrated protest both in the Parliament and outside as well for the past two days. While people in the State are agitated over the denial of its due share in the 2018-19 budget presented by Aurn Jaitely, the parties are engaged in enacting well-protected and well-guarded agitation that doesn’t cause any inconvenience to the BJP leader or Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It looks as if the two major parties, the ruling partner TDP and the Opposition YSR Congress, are holding their protests as desired and designed by the Modi dispensation.
Holding placards and raising soft slogans, the MPs of the two parties from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been displaying a well-censored anger against the injustice done to the State in the Jaitely’s budget. At the end of the day, they are forming beeline at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to get their conduct certificate for the day. The MPs, perhaps guided by their own party leaders, are competing with each other to entertain Modi government and protect themselves and their leaders from being the targets of Modi’s anger.
What the AP MPs have done at the time of bifurcation in 2013-14 by holding on to their posts and exhibiting a well-designed soft protest, they are doing the same now in the name of injustice to the State in the budget. The only difference is that during bifurcation the Congress MPs were in the Cabinet, while now it is the TDP MPs who are part of the Central government.
While the TDP MPs acts are justified as they are an ally to the BJP, the attitude of the YSR Congress MPs is most shocking for the people to watch. One wonders why the YSR Congress is trying to please the BJP though not an ally of the NDA.
It is clear that both Chandrababu Naidu of the TDP and Jaganmohan Reddy of the YSR Congress are more concerned about the cases that they have on them and the threats that the Modi dispensation is giving them. While Jaganmohan Reddy is interested in reducing the intensity of the cases that he is already facing, Chandrababu Naidu is careful about not provoking Modi on the cases like Cash for Vote.
On Tuesday, at the end of the Parliament session, the TDP MPs, led by Minister Y S Chowdary, visited the PMO and were shocked to see YSR Congress MP V Vijayasai Reddy already waiting there. While what transpired there is not known, it is clear that the two parties are visiting the PMO to get the conduct certificate for their protest all through the day.
