Telugu Desam supremo and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is now in a fix as YSR Congress MP V Vijaysai Reddy meets and requests the Election Commission to keep an eye on impending Rajya Sabha elections in the State in March this year.
The term of Congress members, K Chiranjeevi and Renuka Chowdary and the TDP member T Devender Goud is expiring on April 2, 2018 and an election is likely to be held in the third week of March. While the Congress is set to lose both the seats, the TDP will get two this time, leaving one for the YSR Congress. But, Chandrababu Naidu had taken 23 MLAs from the YSR Congress bringing down the Opposition’s strength from 67 to 44, the magical number to win the Rajya Sabha seat. Chandrababu Naidu had planned to take a few more MLAs from the YSR Congress depriving them of the chance to win the RS seat. The TDP has already started horse trading with an eye on the RS elections in March.
Vijayasai Reddy had already complained to the EC about the horse trading and even accused TDP MP T G Venkatesh of contacting the YSR Congress MLAs offering them money. He had requested the EC to keep an eye on the TDP activities and also ensure that the RS elections in AP are held impartial. This would go handy for the EC to have an eye on the elections, making it tough for the TDP to deprive the YSR Congress of winning its seat.
Moreover, Chandrababu Naidu is currently busy trying to save his face in the budget episode and any attempt by him to indulge in horse trading would cost him dearer. Winning one more Rajya Sabha seat or depriving the YSR Congress of its seat is not the priority of Chandrababu Naidu at this stage as he had to protect his party and his electoral prospects in the light of people feeling betrayed by the BJP-TDP combine. Chandrababu Naidu had to come out of the alliance and see that the betrayal anger is targeted at the BJP and not his TDP.
Given this situation, for these two reasons, Chandrababu Naidu may not resort to any manipulation during the Rajya Sabha elections
