All is not well with the State unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As the party had not grown up to the level of winning any election in the State on its own and the presence of Modi at the Centre was seen as advantage to strengthen the party, it did not happen for various reasons. Leaders like Kanna Lakshminarayana, Purandheswari and Somu Veerraju have been trying to strengthen the party taking advantage of the presence of Modi and his wave across the country. But, they have resistance from within the party from its State president Kambhampati Haribabu and Minister Kamineni Srinivas, who are close to the ruling TDP. It was because of these two leaders that the party in AP had not taken advantage of Modi wave to spread the party.
The party national leadership has dozens of complaints against these two leaders who have been close to the TDP and not allowing the BJP to grow in the State. The national leadership had to put pressure on Haribabu to speak to the media in Delhi last fortnight listing out what was done to the State by the Central government. He had just read out the papers given to him by the party leadership and was not seen making any attempt to convince people or go hard against the ally – TDP.
Minister Kamineni had also gone to the national capital last week to complain against Somu Veerraju stating that he was creating problems for the alliance. But, when he met party national president Amit Shah, it is widely said here that Shah had given mouthful to Kamineni on his loyalties to the TDP than the BJP.
The TDP critics in BJP have now an upper hand over the TDP loyalists, several leaders admit openly in the party office here. The party leadership is only waiting for the TDP to break the alliance so that the party can expand its base in the State, at least in some pockets like Visakhapatnam, Rajamahendravaram, Vijayawada and Nellore where they have some presence. It is to be seen whether the squabbles among the leaders help the party to grow or perish.
