The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) which had generated a positive wave across the State in the 2014 elections is now getting isolated in the State politics. The party had two points that created positive wave for riding the 2014 elections – the Modi wave and the heroic fight put up by its leader M Venkaiah Naidu in Rajya Sabha at the time of bifurcation. These two issues have come as advantage BJP which finally helped the TDP to win the polls, though in a small margin.
However, the BJP leadership did not make use of the Modi wave and the Venkaiah Naidu’s contribution to the State. Common man and the unemployed youth had some soft corner for the BJP those days because of Venkaiah Naidu while the educated, middle class and above middle class had hopes on Modi’s leadership. Unfortunately, the BJP State leadership did not use either issues to cash in on and have its base strengthened in the State. The reason was again, as claimed by the BJP leaders themselves, the soft corner of Venkaiah Naidu and BJP State president K Haribabu in favour of the TDP in the State. The two leaders, as alleged by the BJP leaders in the State, have not allowed the party to strengthen and expand its base in the State as that would hurt the interests of the TDP.
Now, with the TDP too is moving away or causing damaging campaign against Modi and BJP national leadership, the party State unit remained isolated. Its future is also sealed in the State because of the denial of special category status.
The Opposition YSR Congress is ahead of all parties in fighting for the special category status, while the Left parties too have taken up the issue. With every political party and peoples’ organisation beating the drums for the special category status pointing an accusing finger at the BJP, the State leaders are finding it hard to face the challenges. People even at the grassroots are blaming the BJP and moving away from it. Those who have supported the BJP-Modi-Shah in the last election are not ready to lend their hand to the party in the next elections. The elite, who have campaigned for Modi and honoured Venkaiah Naidu are now the most disappointed lot.
The elite who expected a different government from Modi and the educated who expected a corruption free dispensation are now unhappy with the unfolding of things including the number of scams and the way the accused were let to go out of the country. The escape of Vijay Malya, Lalith Modi and Nirav Modi from the country had painted black on the BJP abilities and honest politics. It is not easy or rather possible for the BJP leaders in Andhra Pradesh to think of growing again under these given circumstances.
