Leader of Opposition in AP Assembly and YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is entering the Guntur district on Monday. He had completed his padayatra in Prakasam district and would be entering Guntur at Stuvartpuram near Chirala.
Started in Kadapa, Jagan Mohan Reddy had completed the walk in Ananthapur, Chittoor, Kurnool, Nellore and Prakasam districts so far. During his padayatra, Jagan Mohan Reddy had successfully highlighted the State’s demand for the special category status and had made it a bigger issue. The pressure he could mount and the campaign he could make during his walk had forced to the ruling TDP, which had compromised for the special package against the special category status, had to come back to the demand. The issue had also forced the TDP to withdraw its Ministers from the Union cabinet causing mild cracks in the NDA alliance.
To that extent, Jagan Mohan Reddy had succeeded in keeping the special category issue active and had set the issue as agenda for the 2019 elections. He would be going for the next round of elections on the special category status. He could rally the youth and students for the issue. He had made all the political parties to take up the issue and fight for it.
The special category status demand in the State now is only because of his initiative during the padayatra. Otherwise, the demand would have gone out of the political agenda as the BJP had dropped it and TDP had termed it as a closed chapter. Having brought the closed chapter to the forefront of the political campaign in the State and making it the electoral agenda for the next round, it is now to be seen how Jagan Mohan Reddy would get the maximum benefit out of it at the polls.
The YSR Congress chief would have to take the issue to the polling booths that would benefit him this time and make his dream of becoming the Chief Minister coming true. This would require an electoral strategy in which the young leader is comparatively weak.
Chandrababu Naidu, who had called the special category status as a closed chapter is now claiming himself as the champion, particularly after the resignation of his Ministers from the NDA cabinet. A true electoral strategist, Chandrababu Naidu is leaving no opportunity to blame the BJP for denying the special category status and is claiming the credit for the fight. It is to be seen how people would take Chandrababu Naidu’s new agenda of special category status, about which he had said differently at different occasions in the last four years.
A closed chapter is now the important chapter in the State for the political parties. While Chandrababu Naidu had closed this chapter, Jagan Mohan Reddy had kept it active and brought it forefront. Now, who gains the political mileage out of it is to be seen in the elections.
