YSR Congress petitions election commission against TDP’s meet

The YSR Congress had submitted a petition to the State Election Officer R P Sisodia alleging that the ruling Telugu Desam Party was resorting to poll violation. The YSR Congress wanted the Election Officer to stop the TDP from holding a public meeting in Tirupati on April 30 as the election code is in force in Chittoor district for the MLC by-election.

The Election Commission had issued notification for the by-election to the Local Authorities Constituency MLC by-election caused by the death of sitting member Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu in February this year. The election is scheduled for May 21 and the ruling TDP had cleared the candidature of Muddhukrishnama Naidu’s widow Saraswati as their candidate while the YSR Congress is yet to take a call on the issue.

Meanwhile, as the election code of conduct is in force in the entire Chittoor district, the YSR Congress wanted the State Election Officer to squash the TDP’s meeting set to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for betrayal of the State. It was in Tirupati on April 30 in 2014 Narendra Modi had addressed an election meeting where he had promised special category status to the State, besides funding the State to build a capital that would be better than New Delhi.

Four years later, Narendra Modi had denied the special category status and had not released funds to the new capital, Aamravati, the TDP feels and set to tell the people that Modi and the BJP have betrayed the State and the TDP. The TDP is also set to target the YSR Congress in the meeting accusing the party of aligning with the BJP. The meeting is a political event and the TDP leaders, including Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu are set to make political speeches here.

The YSR Congress leader Bhumana Karunakar Reddy, requested the State Election Officer to stop this political meeting of the TDP as part of the implementation of the election code of conduct. The district administration of Chittoor is already observing the election code of conduct. The YSR Congress blames the TDP too for the betrayal and is planning a day long protest and public meeting in Visakhapatnam on the same day as part of its Betrayal Day protest.

It is to be seen if the State Election Officer would take action against the TDP and suspend its meeting due to the election code of conduct or would let the TDP have its meeting targeting the BJP and the YSR Congress.”Ït is highly objectionable if the election commission allows the TDP to hold public meeting where the code of conduct is in force. We will take up the issue with the EC seriously,” said Karunakar Reddy.
