YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy visited Nimmakuru village of Gudur mandal in Krishna district on Monday. He had been visiting several villages during his padayatra which he started at Pulivendula on June 6 last year. But, Nimmakuru visit was something different. It had won him some hearts putting him ahead of his rival Chandrababu Naidu.
Nimmakuru is not just a village, for Andhra Pradesh politics. It is something that produced a legend in the Telugu film industry and Andhra Pradesh politics. It was here N T Rama Rao was born and his roots still remain here. The man who changed the film industry and politics as well by building a first non-Congress government at the Centre is remembered every day by his relatives and the villagers as well.
On his visit, Jagan Mohan Reddy had a half-a-dozen family members of N T Rama Rao, the founder of the Telugu Desam Party, meeting him and complaining against the TDP government. The silt removal in the village irrigation tank and the sale of silt at Rs 300 a tractor trailer load and Rs 1500 a lorry load had angered the villagers. Though they support the TDP in the elections, this time, they appeared unhappy with the things going on. Besides the corruption here, the NTR family members also accused the TDP leaders of grabbing their properties. A 60-year old woman, a close relative of NTR, feared threat to her life from Machilipatnam MP. This is the reality in the village and that reflects the mood of the people in other parts of the State.
Jagan Mohan Reddy while condemning the corruption, paid rich tributes to late NTR and declared that he would rename Krishna district after NTR. This statement enthused many fans of the late matinee idol. Born in Krishna district, NTR had even represented Gudivada Assembly constituency in the past. He studied in Vijayawada and thus is connected to the district. His role in the 1977 cyclone that devastated the entire Diviseema region is also remembered by the people. Thus, the decision to give his name to the native district is welcomed by the people, while the TDP was caught unaware.
The YSR Congress chief, thus had moved one step forward, particularly among the dominant Kamma community in Krishna and Guntur districts. It is to be seen it this enthusiasm continues till the next polls and give Jagan Mohan Reddy the benefit in the forms of votes or would continue to be advantage TDP.
