The election in Karnataka is over. Now, the BJP is looking at Andhra Pradesh for its footing. The party had already owned up the dominant Kapu community by appointing former minister Kanna Lakshminarayana as party State unit president. It believes that Kanna’s candidature would help the party win the community, which has no political representation in the State.
Besides wooing the Kapu community, the BJP is also planning to rope in the dominant Kamma community too into the party. This would mean that the Telugu Desam Party would lose its base in the State. There are already some leaders from the Kamma community in the party and it wants a vertical split of the TDP with more Kamma leaders joining the party.
According to the information available, some of the leaders from the TDP are ready to join the BJP ahead of the elections. The community has no potential leader after Chandrababu Naidu to lead them. It is for this reason they want a new leadership or a new umbrella which has to protect their political and business interests. The BJP is already shielding the business interests of some leaders like Y S Chowdary, Kavuri Sambasiva Rao and Rayapati Sambasiva Rao. While Kavuri is already in the BJP fold, the other leaders are now looking at the BJP .
It is widely said that the BJP is planning Triupara exercise in Andhra Pradesh. Tripura, a fortress of the Communists, is now in the BJP fold as it had roped in all the Congress leaders ahead of the last elections. Similarly in Andhra Pradesh, the BJP wants to take as many TDP leaders as possible and thus strengthen its base ahead of the 2019 elections. The party, which had already started this exercise even before Karnataka elections, is set to resume the work soon.
There is widespread resentment within the TDP over the promotion of Lokesh in the party and this dissent is likely to come as advantage to the BJP. Leaders like Ram Madhav, GVL Narasimha Rao and Muralidhara Rao are working on this. Now that they are free from the Mission Karnataka, they are likely to begin the Mission Andhra Pradesh soon, as Narasimha Rao himself had claimed some time back.
