With the buzz about early elections, the speculations are on about who is contesting from where. All eyes are on Visakhapatnam, a key constituency in Andhra Pradesh. Most of those who represented this constituency are non-locals. In the last elections, this constituency attracted all the attention in the two Telugu states. The reason being YSRCP chief Y. S. Jagan’s mother Y. S. Vijayamma contesting from here. In the sensational outcome, Vijayalakshmi lost the election while BJP candidate K. Haribabu romped home.
In the coming elections for Visakhapatnam MP seat, five-cornered contest is inevitable. The situation in the coming election will be different from what it was in the previous election. Now BJP and TDP have separated. YSRCP is gearing up to prove its might. New player Jana Sena is also racing ahead. Compared to the last election, Congress appears to be making some recovery. In this context, the contest will be among five and whoever wins will be with slight majority. Some names are being heard from TDP, YSRCP and BJP. No names have so far been heard from Congress and Jana Sena.
TDP, BJP and Jana Sena which joined hands in 2014 elections, separates few months ago. They are moving on their paths. In the previous election, common candidate of these three parties K. Haribabu was elected. It looks certain that in the coming elections these three parties will enter the fray. Will sitting MP Haribabu contest in the coming elections or not? There is confusion over this. He is said to be disappointed over politics due to the current situation in the state. However, there is also a talk that he will contest on the direction of the party leadership. If Haribabu doesn’t agree, there are chances of Kashi Vishawanatha Raju being fielded in his place. We will have to wait for some time for clarity over this.
Two to three names are being heard from the ruling TDP. Significantly, MLC MVSS Murthy is aspiring for the ticket. In the past, he was elected as MP from here. He lost consecutive polls in 2004 and 2009. In 2009, he plunged to third place due Praja Rajyam effect. In this context, he is again looking to test his fortunes from this key seat in the coming elections. In case he is not given the chance, he will be keen to field Bharat, who is seen as his political successor and who is younger son-in-law of actor Balakrishna.
Similarly, the name of Bhimili MLA and minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao is also being heard. However, he himself termed this as mere gossip. He announced that in the coming elections he will contest again from Bhimili. Another name is also being heard. There are reports that TDP president and Chief Minister Chandrababu is planning to give ticket to backward class. In this context, sitting MLA from Gajuwaka P. Srinivasa Rao may be fielded. In 2009 elections, he had contested as Praja Rajyam candidate and gave tough fight to Purandareswari. He had finished second. Babu reportedly believes that if P. Srinivasa Rao contests for MP then the party will get more support from BCs.
It is being said that YSRCP will give ticket to Rajya Sabha member Vijay Sai Reddy or somebody suggested by him. From Jana Sena the names of few former MLAs are being heard. If those holding key posts in TDP jump into Jana Sena before the elections, they will be ready to test their political fortunes. Some economically well-off from Kapu community are ready to contest on Jana Sena ticket. Currently nobody from Congress is showing any interest but before the elections aspirants will definitely come forward.
