The Andhra Pradesh Congress got an opportunity to hit at YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy ahead of the elections. Jaganmohan Reddy and his party leaders have declared that they would support and align with the party whichever promises special category status to Andhra Pradesh.
Taking this statement, the Congress leaders asked Jaganmohan Reddy to align with the Congress which had promised the special category status to the State at the time of bifurcation. The Congress also recalled that AICC president Rahul Gandhi had promised special category status to the State if Congress is voted to power at the Centre. Rahul Gandhi, during the party plenary in Delhi a couple of months ago, said that the special category status to Andhra Pradesh would be one of his first signatures as Prime Minister after the election.
Since Rahul Gandhi had promised what Jaganmohan Reddy and his party wanted, Congress former minister Sake Sailajanath, asked the YSR Congress chief to announce his support to the Congress and Rahul Gandhi. While the YSR Congress or Jaganmohan Reddy are yet to respond to this call, the Congress leaders took at dig at the ruling Telugu Desam Party in the State and the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre for denying the bifurcation benefits to the State. Sailajanath said that the BJP and the TDP together have promised special category status for 10 years to the State during the 2014 elections. However, after winning the elections, the two parties have gone back on the promise and denied it.
The BJP had dropped the special category status issue and had brought the special package in its place. The Telugu Desam Party too had given up its claims for the special category status and had settled for the package. This is what the Congress claimed as betrayal by the two parties. Though the TDP is now asking for the special category status, the Congress terms it as election trick, while the BJP looks at it as betrayal of alliance spirit by the TDP.
