Focus is on 70 Assembly seats only

Days after AICC president Rahul Gandhi’s uninspiring visit to the State, the Congress party in Telangana is focusing on 70 Assembly constituencies for the next round of elections. The party, which is aspiring to wrest the power from the ruling Telangana Rastra Samithi in the next election, is understood to have decided to focus on getting simple majority in the 119 member Assembly in the State.

The party requires to win 60 Assembly seats for simple majority in the Assembly to form the government. On this count, the Congress leaders are now setting their eyes on picking up the 70 Assembly constituencies where it can win. Though it is not ready to lose the remaining seats, it wants to put all its energies in these 70 constituencies and thus give a run to the TRS for its life.

The ruling TRS is sitting comfortably and confidentially making itself sure of the victory. While letting the TRS to have the same confidence, the Congress wants to beat the ruling party from behind by limiting its resources and focus on these select segments.

The Congress leaders are also focusing on the 12 Lok Sabha constituencies to help the party chief Rahul Gandhi make it to the Prime Minister’s Office. The party is working hand in every state, with every non-BJP party to ensure that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is prevented from becoming the prime minister for the second term. In this run, the Congress is compromising with several regional parties on one hand and strengthening its own base on the other.

In the south, it is only in Telangana where the Congress has some better chances of winning, next to Karnataka. The party has no presence in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, at least for the 2019 and 2024 elections. Hence the focus is more on Telangana and the party high command had already directed the Telangana leaders to do their best.

However, it is to be seen how the Congress leaders from Telangana would keep their egos aside and work together to win the polls. It is also to be seen if this strategy works for the party to help Rahul Gandhi realise his dream.
