Telugu Desam Party chief and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is set to decide on his party’s electoral alliance with the Congress in Telangana. As the ruling Telangana Rastra Samithi had already dissolved the Assembly and named its candidates for the elections, the TDP is now getting ready for the polls.
Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to visit Hyderabad on September 8 to be present in the family’s event, the death ceremony of Nandamuri Harikrishna. After the ceremony in the family, Chandrababu Naidu would meet the TDP leaders from Telangana where he would decide on the alliance and also have discussions on the candidates.
In the initial talks with the Congress, the TDP was offered two MP seats and 25 MLA seats in alliance. Given the present strength of the party in Telangana and its Andhra brand image among the Telangana voters, the TDP is comfortable with the numbers offered by the Congress. However, the alliance has to be sanctified by Chandrababu Naidu taking care that it won’t damage the party’s prospects in Andhra Pradesh.
Even in Andhra Pradesh Chandrababu Naidu wants to fund the Congress elections to damage the vote bank of Opposition YSR Congress. The TDP chief had reportedly conveyed his preparedness to fund the party at least in 25 Assembly constituencies, for which the Congress leadership is also agreed. Naidu has close contacts with former chief minister Kirankumar Reddy, former speaker Nadendla Manohar and former MP N Tulasi Reddy, through whom he is communicating with the party high command.
In Telangana, the TDP leaders are psychologically prepared to have electoral alliance with the Congress. They are justifying that to beat the main enemy, TRS, it was politically necessary for all the rivals to come together. As the party is also prepared to contest in the constituencies where Andhra settlers are in big numbers, the alliance with the Congress keeps them in advantage position.
Besides the selective-25 Assembly seats, the TDP’s gain of Khammam and Malkajgiri Lok Sabha seats is an advantage as the party is considerably strong here with the settler voters dominating the rest and being the deciding factor for the victory in any election. Thus, the TDP in Telangana finds the polls on its advantage by going with the Congress.
However, the leaders are waiting for the party chief Chandrababu Naidu to come and sanctify the alliance, before the party launches the poll campaign.
