TDP in TS looks for grand alliance

The Telugu Desam Party in Telangana is looking forward to build a grand alliance of all opposition parties against the ruling Telangana Rastra Samithi. After its national president Chandrababu Naidu had given his nod for the party to forge alliance with the like-minded parties to go against the TRS, the TDP Telangana unit president L Ramana had his first meeting with Congress president Uttamkumar Reddy. Ramana had also met CPI chief Chada Venkata Reddy on the same day.

The parties are trying to build a united force with the Congress leading it as big brother for which the TDP is ready. The Congress and TDP leaders, besides the CPI chief, have initially agreed to have a common minimum programme for the election campaign. They are also planning to have a common and combined election campaign to challenge the ruling TRS, which is placed in a comfortable position despite the anti-incumbency factor.

While the TDP looks at Chandrababu Naidu and his son Nara Lokesh to campaign for the party in the State, it is felt that the father and son are not ready to have any direct clash with TRS chief Chandrasekhar Rao or his son Taraka Rama Rao. Chandrababu Naidu wanted his party TS leaders to lead the campaign limiting his role to Andhra Pradesh.

The Congress too is banking on its national president Rahul Gandhi to be the star campaigner as there is no unanimity among the leaders to project anyone of them. Uttam Kumar Reddy and Jana Reddy are the top contenders for the Chief Minister slot in the event of the party coming to power. Though there are other leaders aspiring for the post, the competition is tough between these two leaders and neither of them is ready to accept the leadership of the other.

In this situation, it is mostly Rahul Gandhi’s show in Telangana for the Congress campaign. The Congress and the TDP leaders are also looking at Prof. Kodandaram’s Telangana Jana Samithi, to keep the Opposition votes intact against the ruling TRS. It is to be seen how this new mechanism works for the Opposition, particularly the Congress to defeat the TRS and get into the treasury benches.
