Gaddar now is a Congress sympathiser

Gummadi Vithal Rao, who is known as Gaddar and popular as revolutionary balladeer, is now a strong sympathiser of the Congress. While his son Surya Kiran and wife Vimala have already joined the Congress and his son wants to try his luck in politics from Bellampalli Assembly constituency in the impending elections, he says he would help the Congress to fight against the new and neo-feudalism that is found in Telangana.

He claims that he is not interested in joining any political party as of now, but is ready to take on Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao as a common candidate of the entire Opposition at Gajwel Assembly constituency. Though Gaddar enjoys support from among the poor and below middle class voters, it is to be seen if he emerges as a common candidate to fight the electoral battle against Chandrasekhar Rao. Perhaps this would be the first ever electoral battle that Gaddar is trying to field himself after he gave up the revolutionary path two decades ago. Prof. Kodandaram, once a civil rights activist closely associated with the then Peoples’ War Group, in which Gaddar was an active player, too is fighting his first ever electoral battle this time.

The Congress is heading the front with the Opposition parties in the State barring the MIM, YSR Congress, CPM and Jana Sena. The CPM and Jana Sena are tied up together, while the YSR Congress is set to go it alone in a few selective segments. The MIM too is going alone, mostly focusing its energies and efforts in the twin cities, to be more precise, in Hyderabad.

After meeting AICC president Rahul Gandhi, the balladeer said that he, like Rahul, is more interested in protecting the country and the constitution. Gaddar, one of the key players in the Telangana movement, had been using his time and energies to unite the deprived sections of Telangana State. He is mostly with the democratic and secular forces that have been fighting against the ruling classes’ exploitation.
