The Congress former president Sonia Gandhi, who gave Telangana State in 2014 against stiff resistance from Andhra Pradesh leadership, is arriving in the State on November 23 for the first time to campaign for the Congress-led alliance in the State.
As said, it is her first visit to the State after it was created on June 2, 2014. The Congress had failed to take the credit for creation of the State in 2014 elections. However, this time, the Congress leaders are in the forefront in recalling the past and trying to take the credit for the Congress. They have been talking about the statehood now and Sonia’s visit is to talk about the bifurcation and the tough time that she had during those days.
It was only because of Sonia’s strong will that gave statehood for the Telangana region, ending 60 year old struggle. Even the Bharatiya Janata Party tried to take the credit with Sushma Swaraj being called as “Chinnamma” while Sonia Gandhi was termed those days as “Pedamma”. But, the voters, due to Congress leaders failure, gave the credit only to the Telangana Rastra Samithi and voted for Chandrasekhar Rao.
Sonia took the strong decision to divide the State only after Chandrasekhar Rao promised her that he would merge his TRS with the Congress. However, he went back on the promise betraying the Congress leadership, particularly Sonia Gandhi. This is all set to be recalled now with Sonia Gandhi visiting the State after four years.
It is to be seen if the Telangana voters would acknowledge Sonia Gandhi’s contribution in giving the State or would be carried away by the four-and-a-half years regime of Chandrasekhar Rao. There is a strong campaign in the State that KCR’s tenure had rolled out dolls to cross sections of the people, including the one for the farming community. The Rythu Bandhu is one of the popular schemes of Telangana that had benefited every farmer and is acknowledged elsewhere.
