AP says no to CBI role in the State

Andhra Pradesh Blocked entry of CBI into the state

The Andhra Pradesh government had reiterated that it would not allow the CBI to take up investigation into corruption charges in the State. With the CBI accusing the State Home Ministry of leaking the information to the ACB in a corruption case at Machilipatnam, the State Home Department denied the charge and said that the information was also shared with the State police leading to the raid.

The Home Ministry further said that the CBI was asked to work with the ACB which was refused by the former. “We have proposed a joint enquiry/investigation into the case when the CBI sought permission. But, the CBI refused to share the work with the ACB leading to the ACB carrying out the task.

The clash between the Central investigating agency and the State investigating agency is a reflection of the political differences between the ruling Telugu Desam Party in the State and the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu is locked in a political fight with the BJP’s prime minister Narendra Modi and that is being reflected in the departmental functioning of the officials.

Though there are chances of the CBI seeking court intervention in its operations in the State, the central agency is in deep trouble to spare its time. A case is pending before the Supreme Court on the very functioning of the CBI and its director and it might take time for the organisation to settle scores with Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Chandrababu Naidu appears determined to stop the CBI in the State, which is poised to take up investigation into the corruption charges against several TDP leaders including the Ministers. This is what worries Chandrababu Naidu more than the central government’s non-cooperation in terms of rolling out the dolls of bifurcation. Naidu is angry with Modi because of the threats of the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate conducting raids on TDP Ministers, which would weaken the party in the next elections. It is this fear that had stopped the CBI from taking up investigations in the State.

It is to be seen where will this war leads to by the time both Chandrababu Naidu and Narendra Modi go for another round of elections in 2019.
