Nandamuri family is the one which turned the tide of Andhra Pradesh politics. NT Rama Rao formed Telugu Desam against Congress party and people have been showing affection towards TDP. After NTR’s death, Chandrababu Naidu has been carrying this party forward. With one crore membership TDP is spread across both the states. After the bifurcation, TDP came to power in Andhra Pradesh but was confined to 15 seats in Telangana. Out of these, 13 crossed over to other parties. That’s why this time Chandrababu Naidu took all precautions and gave tickets to those whom he can trust.
Kukatpally is a key constituency among the 13 where TDP has fielded its candidates. By fielding Harikrishna’s daughter Suhasini from here, Chandrababu Naidu showed his political shrewdness. It is significant to note that Nandamuri family is contesting in Telangana after nearly three decades. In the past NTR had contested from Telangana twice when it was part of undivided Andhra Pradesh. In 1985, NTR was elected from Nalgonda. In that election, NTR wanted to get elected from Telangana, Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra. He contested from Nalgonda in Telangana, Hindupur in Rayalaseema and Gudivada in coastal Andhra. He won from all three seats but retained Hindupur and vacated two others.
In 1989, NTR once again contested from Hindupur in Rayalaseema and from Kalwakurthy in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana. However, in that election people of Kalwakurthy rejected NTR. Here Congress candidate Chitranjan Das was elected. After this defeat, Nandamuri family stopped contesting from Telangana. After 1989, Nandamuri family did not contest from Telangana. NTR’s son Nandamuri Balakrishna has been contesting from Hindupur in Rayalaseema. Thus Nandamuri family did not contest from Telangana for three decades.
In the current elections in Telangana, Suhasini’s contest has attracted the attention. TDP leaders made their best efforts for her victory. Suhasini’s uncle Balakrishna camped in Kukatpally. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu also campaigned aggressively in Kukatpally. With Nandamuri family entering poll fray after 30 years, the contest is being treated as prestigious. That’s why ministers and MLAs from AP worked round the clock. However, as doubts are being expressed over Suhasini’s victory, TDP leaders are worried that Kukatpally may become another Kalwakurthy. It remains to be seen if some magic will happen on the polling day or not.
