The Maha Kutami leaders are now holding reviews to find out the reasons for their defeat in the just concluded Telangana Assembly elections. The grand alliance of the Congress, Telugu Desam Party, Telangana Jana Samithi and CPI was initially poised for a big win in the elections. The Congress had high hopes on wresting power from the ruling Telangana Rastra Samithi.
There was some sort of anti-incumbency felt across the State and the TRS leaders too had, at one point of time, some doubts over their victory. Some said that even if the TRS wins, that would be with fewer margins or might require the support of the MIM to form the government. From that situation, the kutami had faced humiliating defeat.
Prof. Kodandaram’s party Telangana Jana Samithi could not make it to the Assembly this time. His party could not win even a single seat and the irony is that he could not contest the election. The Congress had denied him the seat in alliance in the last minute giving him no option but to keep out of the contest. He was limited to campaigning along with the Congress and TDP leaders in the whole exercise.
The TDP could not win its Kukatpalli seat despite the Nandamuri family campaigning for Nandamuri Suhasini, daughter of late Nandamuri Harikrishna. The TDP had high hopes on this seat, besides some seats in the capital area and some more from the Khammam district. It was able to win two seats in Khammam district, while it had a crushing defeat everywhere.
The Congress too had its own assessment of winning more than 60 seats on its own. On the negative side, the Congress leaders have settled for 50 seats to be a strong opposition. However, their strength was reduced to 19 in the 119 member Assembly.
The post-mortem is now giving them some reasons to satisfy from their defeat. The Congress leaders said that there was delay in releasing the list of candidates for the Assembly and the candidates had less time to reach out to the voters. Some Congress leaders say that the defeat was because of the alliance with the TDP.
Now, there is real and clear post-mortem done by Prof. Kodandaram, who said that the grand alliance had failed to counter KCR’s campaign style. He said that the Kutami leaders could not match the style and language of KCR, which helped the TRS win the polls. The intensive campaign and the selective language that KCR used against the rivals went deeper into the people, while the kutami could not counter it.
