AP Assembly Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao is known for speaking politics every time despite he being in a neutral constitutional position. Unlike any of his predecessors, the AP Assembly speaker indulges in politics both in the Assembly and outside as well. He even attends the ruling party’s political meetings often in his native Narasaraopet and Sathenapalli constituencies.
On the other day, he sought for the defeat of Opposition leader Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in the elections and sought women to vote for his Telugu Desam Party. He also made an appeal to the people to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party which had done injustice to the State by denying special category status and other benefits. Kodela subscribed TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu’s allegation of Janamohan Reddy aligning with the BJP and went one step forward to see a conspiracy by the YSR Congress against Andhra Pradesh.
The TDP leaders like Pratibha Bharathi, who was the speaker for several years, kept herself away from the party politics while being in the office. There were others who held the posts but did not take active part in their respective party activities. But, Kodela is known for being active in TDP programms and he holds the party workers meet in his constituency against the established tradition.
Though he is expected to be apolitical and impartial in the Assembly as its head, he always acted to favour his TDP against the criticism from the opposition. There were occasions when he took the Assembly to his side and his Speaker post to his favour with the TDP members passing resolutions in the House condemning the criticism of Ambati Rambabu, who lost the Sathenapalli Assembly seat to Kodela in 2014.
At the women’s meeting in Guntur, Kodela started the election campaign by seeking votes for the TDP for one more term.
