In the last session of the Assembly, Telugu Desam Party supremo and chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is rolling out the poll promises to the people to catch their votes in the impending elections. He is coming out with one after the other benefits to woo the voters and stay in power. He is going strong and aggressive too to reach out to the voters.
In continuation to what Chandrababu Naidu had been rolling out the benefits for the past fortnight, the TDP chief had rolled out better schemes to lure the cross sections of the people. The government had tabled seven bills in the Assembly on Wednesday of which two are important. One bill was to create sub-plan for the Backward Classes on the lines of the sub-plans for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. The sub-plan would give greater share of funds from various departments of the State government to the BCs for their overall development. This would win the votes for the TDP from this dominant group which consists of 138 sub-castes.
The other bill was to extend 5 per cent reservations to the Kapus and their sub-castes in education and employment. The Kapu, Ontari, Balija and Telaga castes have been fighting for reservations for the past three years. They have been on fighting more seeking their inclusion in the BC list as promised by the TDP in the 2014 elections. Though the government had clamped restrictions on their movement, it had become victim of their anger with former minister Mudragada Padmanabha representing their anger and anguish. Now, the government had introduced the bill in Assembly to give 5 per cent quota from the 10 per cent quota announced by the Central government for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
The State government had also passed one resolution recognising the Dalit Christians as Scheduled Castes, a long pending demand of the small group, who have changed their religion but not the social and economic conditions. The demand had been there for decades and now the TDP had grabbed the opportunity to consider it. The Assembly had passed a resolution seeking the Central government to consider the Dalit Christians as SCs and extend the SC reservations for them. These Dalit Christians are categorised as BC-C now and the government wanted them to be in the SC list.
The other doll that was rolled out was giving the Legislative Council chairman post to the Muslims, as promised by Chandrababu Naidu during the by-election in Nandyal two years ago. The TDP chief had nominated MLC M A Shariff as the chairman of the Council who would be taking the charge on today.
The TDP chief believes that these measures would help the party retain the power and stay in treasury benches for another five years. However, it is to be seen if these dolls will really get votes as expected!
