Is Congress set to lose its base in Telugu States?

The Congress is all set to lose its base in the two Telugu States. The party is reduced to zero in Andhra Pradesh and has no hope of even getting its deposits in the impending elections, leave alone winning even a single Assembly seat. It might take a few more elections for the Congress in Andhra Pradesh to win any election. The party is now facing the same fate that it had in the neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Though the Congress in Andhra Pradesh is busy with programmes one after the other and is busy promising special category status, there are no hopes of the party winning any election. The party has no prospects in its favour in the impending Parliament elections.

In Telangana, though the party had won 19 Assembly seats in the recent elections, it is now losing the MLAs to the ruling Telangana Rastra Samithi. The loss is predicted to be more in the Parliament elections as it is unlikely of winning even a single MP seat out of the total 17 in the State. The Congress is placed better in the undivided Khammam district where the party had won 9 out of its total 19 seats. However, the entry of Sathupalli’s Telugu Desam Party MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah into the ruling TRS, the Congress had lost its hopes of winning the Khammam Lok Sabha seat in the impending election.

The TRS is pinning to win 16 MP seats leaving the one seat – Hyderabad Lok Sabha Constituency – to its ally, MIM. The TRS and the MIM are working together to win all the seats, leaving no hope and scope for the Congress to come any closure to them. The defections now seen are part of the strategy that the TRS has on its hand to wipe out the Congress in the State.

If the Congress loses the MP elections, the scope of the party’s revival in the near future is not seen any more. This defeat for the Congress in the two Telugu States would be disastrous for the national party and that would be major loss for the party in the South. The presence of the Congress in Tamil Nadu and the two Telugu States would be in the hands of the regional parties keeping both the Congress and the BJP at their mercy in the national politics.
