Kuppam. There is no need to say much about this constituency. This is because it is represented by AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. After winning the seat for six consecutive terms, Chandrababu is set to contest for the seventh victory in a row. People of Kuppam have been electing Chandrababu with huge majority from 1989. The rival parties here are not even giving a fight. So what will be the strategy of YSRCP to damage the prospects of Chandrababu this time.
YSRCP’s aim appears to be drastically reducing the majority if not winning the seat. YSRCP has almost decided to field former IAS officer Chandramouli as its candidate once again. In the last elections Chandramouli had contested as YSRCP candidate but tasted defeat. He polled 55,000 votes while Chandrababu secured over one lakh votes. As the candidate fighting against the chief ministerial candidate garnered so many votes, there is again enthusiasm in YSRCP camp.
YSRCP leader Jagan could not visit Kuppam during his padyatra but the people of the constituency met him. On this occasion, Jagan announced that Chandramouli will be the party candidate again. During padyatra Jagan promised that if Chandramouli is elected he will be made a minister. YSRCP hopes for a miracle in Kuppam. For this Chandramouli is getting all the assistance from YSR Congress head office. YSRCP’s strategy is that if Chandramouli’s votes increase Chandrababu’s majority will come down.
Chandramouli belongs to Vanne caste and Kshatriya community. The former IAS officer had been campaigning in Kuppam for last six months. He knows that the votes he polled in the last elections were all cast by people of his caste. That’s why he is trying to get closer to his caste and also the other castes. Chandramouli is working hard to delete bogus voters. Though Chandramouli is confident of defeating Chandrababu, it is known to all that this is not possible. YSRCP’s plan is to draw some satisfaction by reducing the majority.
