Lagadapati for Narasaraopet LS on TDP?

Lagadapati Rajgopal

The political corridors are abuzz with talk about former MP from Congress, Lagadapati Rajagopal, contesting from Narasaraopet Lok Sabha constituency this time. Lagadapati had won the Lok Sabha election for twice in 2004 and 2009 from Vijayawada on Congress ticket. He tried to champion the politics with his sensationalism. He was a key leader in the Samaikyandhra movement and had gained national and international identity for his pepper spray act in Parliament at the time of the passing of the AP Reorganisation Act 2014. He also got into some sensational fame when he went missing from Vijayawada hospital after his indefinite fast against bifurcation and surfaced in Hyderabad Osmania Hospital. That was how he conducted his politics, when he was an MP.

However, after his infamous pepper spray act in Lok Sabha and the subsequent bifurcation of the State, Lagadapati announced his exit from active politics. He did not contest the 2014 elections. However, he is seen active in politics by meeting Telugu Desam Party supremo and chief minister Chandrababu Naidu frequently and conducting election surveys. He is known for his accurate survey reports in every election. In fact, he is called as Andhra Octopus for his political predictions. However, his predictions proved wrong in the Telangana Assembly election, where he predicted the Congress-TDP victory. It was said that he was sold out to the TDP and thus moved away from reality. He admitted that his predictions went wrong in Telangana, but there were no takers for his statement.

Meanwhile, Lagadapati had met Assembly speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao in Narasaraopet recently, which kicked off the discussion on his re-entry into politics. It is widely discussed that he would be the TDP candidate for the Narasaraopet Lok Sabha constituency. The TDP had initially planned to field Kodela Sivaprasada Rao from this seat, but seems to have zeroed in on the candidature of Lagadapati.

It is to be seen if Lagadapati, a bankrupt industrialist, with his Lanco group landing in financial troubles, would make his second innings in the TDP or would stay with his statement of quitting politics, as he promised in 2014 against bifurcation.
