Telugu Desam Party supremo and chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is uncertain on holding the cabinet meeting on May 14. Though the proposal was sent to the election committee for its clearance last week, there is no communication from the EC till early Monday. Some sources in the chief minister office say that the communication from the election commission is likely to come by Monday evening as the cabinet meeting is slated for Tuesday.
However, the chief minister office says that it would not be possible for them to schedule the event in a short time for all the Ministers and the officials who are to attend the meeting. It was on this ground the chief minister office had postponed the cabinet meeting from the original date of May 10 due to short notice. When the chief minister office sent the note to the chief secretary to make necessary arrangements for the cabinet meeting, he reminded the officials of the model code of conduct and emphasized the need to get election commission clearance. He also proposed to get agenda for the proposed meeting, which has to be accompanied by a detailed note from the departments concerned justifying the need to hold the cabinet meeting. As this process required a couple of days, the chief minister office posted the meeting to May 14.
Now, almost a week gone and there is no communication from the election commission on the cabinet meeting. Even if the election commission gives clearance today, it would be without financial implications which means that the cabinet should not take any financial decisions including passing of any bill to any contractor or work. Without the financial clearance there is nothing much for the cabinet to meet and discuss and hence some of the senior ministers have reportedly advised Chandrababu Naidu to have second thought on holding such a toothless cabinet meeting.
It is to be seen what Chandrababu Naidu would decide when the election commission sends its clearance to the State cabinet by Monday evening.
