Update: 2023-02-23 10:50 GMT

The central government has decided to issue a Rs 100 silver coin in honour of the Tollywood legendary actor and former chief minister late NT Rama Rao to mark his birth centenary. The officials from the government mint met NTR’s daughter and former Union Minister Daggubati Purandheswari in Hyderabad. The mint officials collected three photographs of late NTR to be used on the coin. It will take a month or more for the officials to finalize the design of the coin.

Meanwhile, an image of the coin with the actor’s portrait on it is going viral with a caption in Telugu that goes “ఎన్టీ రామారావు గారికి దక్కిన అరుదైన గౌరవం శతజయంతి సందర్భంగా రూ.100 నాణెం పై యన్టీఆర్ బొమ్మ… కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం త్వరలోనే ఈ నాణెం విడుదల చేయనుంది జయహో

When translated, it claims “A rare honour for NT Rama Rao on the occasion of his centenary, NTR’s figure on Rs 100 coin... The central government will soon release this coin Jayaho”

Fact check:

The claim is misleading. The central government has decided to release a coin in honour of the legendary actor NT Rama Rao but did not do it yet. When we observe carefully, the coin appears to be a gold or brass coin but not a silver one.

When we searched the image using Google reverse image search, we found the viral images were published in an article on July 1, 2013, on a website named nandamurifans.com.

We also found a few articles published in June 2013 sharing the viral images.

The article published in Indiaherald.com states that as a small gesture to honour late NTR garu and to mark the 100-year celebrations of Indian Cinema, a special gold coin was released. NTR’s figure was etched on the coin on one side and the emblem of Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer hospital on the other. It was designed by Chilakapati Nageswara Rao and Rami Reddy of the Golden Line Company.

The article goes on to state that the gold coin with NTR’s figure will be unveiled during the 40th anniversary of the Delaware Valley Telugu Association on June 28 and 29 at King of Prussia.

Here is another article with the same information.

According to an article on the website idlebrain.com published on July 8, 2013, Golden Line LLC and Basavatarakam Trust introduced the special coin on NTR. It was released by Nandamuri Balakrishna, the son of the legendary actor and a Tollywood actor himself.

Therefore, the gold coin seen in the viral images is from 2013. The claim is misleading.
