Viral video shows a Deer straying in the streets of Hyderabad after getting disturbed from its natural habitat in HCU premises

A major controversy erupted in Hyderabad, Telangana, after the state government proposed an auction of 400 acres of land near Hyderabad Central University.Students and environmental activists are opposing this decision of the government and are protesting strongly. The matter is been brought before the High court for the state of Telangana.

The Telangana High Court on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 ordered a halt to the ongoing work on 400 acres in Kancha Gachibowli near the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) till Thursday, April 3. The court gave the interim order while hearing the Public Interest Litigations filed by HCU students and the Vata Foundation. The court took up the PILs for hearing on Wednesday. While adjourning the hearing to Thursday, the court directed the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) to stop all work.

Meanwhile, several images and videos started going viral with the claims that they depict the wildlifw that has been disturbed in the area of Kancha Gachibowli. A video showing a Sambal deer walking close to people near an apartment is going viral on social media with the claim that the wildlife is being displaced due to the actions of the government of Telangana. A deer was spotted walking near the apartments in the areas nearby to HCU.

Users shared the video with captions like “

రేవంత్ చేస్తున్న విధ్వంసానికి ఫలితం ! ప్రాణభయంతో అందమైన ప్రకృతిని , పచ్చదనాన్ని వదిలి కాంక్రిట్ జనారణ్యంలోకి వచ్చిన జింక .. ఏదో రాక్షసుల మధ్యకి వచ్చినట్లు బిత్తర చూపులు చూస్తున్న అమాయక జీవి . పాలకుడుకి కొంచమైనా జాలి హృదయం ఉండాలి .

Fact check:

The claim that the deer was spotted near an apartment in the neighborhood of Hyderabad Central University after losing their habitat because of Telangana government actions is False. The video is from Visakhapatnam and not Hyderabad.

When observed carefully, we found the Way2News logo on the right top corner on some of the viral videos shared.

We also extracted keyframes from the video and searched them using reverse image search, we found some social media users sharing the same video with the caption “విశాఖలో జనావాసాల్లోకి వస్తున్న వన్యప్రాణులు...దగ్గరలో ఉన్న కంబాల కొండ నుంచి... విశాలాక్షి నగర్ లో అపార్ట్మెంట్ దగ్గరికి వచ్చింది.”

When translated, it states that “the video is from Visalakshi Nagar in Visakhapatnam, where a buck walked into a nearby apartment in a colony”. The author of the post shared in his comments stating that the video was shared by Way2news with the same caption.

We also found another facebook user sharing the same video stating that people are sharing this video with fake narratives. The caption on the video “అడవి జంతువులు ఎలా ఉంటయి, ఎక్కడ ఉంటయి అనే కనీస అవగాహన లేని గులాబీ దద్దమ్మలు, కనబడితే కాల్చుకుతినే బ్యాచ్. #HCU అడవి నరుకుతుంటే జనావాసాల్లోకి వచ్చిన దుప్పి అంటూ ఫేక్ ప్రచారం చేస్తూ ప్రజలను గొర్రెలను చేస్తారు.”

When we observed the comments on this video, we found some of the users shared screenshots of the news published on way2news, the short news app.

Upon further search, we found another Facebook post shared by a user sharing pictures of himself with a deer that was straying near his residence. When comparing the buck seen in the viral video and these images, we found that it is the same Buck. And this buck was seen in Visalakshi Nagar in Visakhapatnam.

Locals showed interest in seeing them. After many had taken selfies, they were also given water. Locals said that they were coming for water as the sun was very intense.”

Way2news also published a fact check stating that the video in circulation is not from Hyderabad; it was shot in Visalakshi Nagar in Visakhapatnam when the residents supplied water to a wild buck that strayed into the neighborhood. Here is the screenshot.

There have been previous instances of people spotting wild Bucks in Visakhapatnam.

Therefore, the viral video showing residents supplying water to a wild buck is not from Hyderabad; it is from Visakhapatnam. The claim is False.
