Fact Check: Video claiming to show sea cow is AI generated

Digital creators uploaded that picture with various emotional and dramatic stories, and users widely shared it on their accounts. Later, it was proven by Telugu Post that the picture was created using AI software.
Recently, a video has gone viral on social media, showing what appears to be a seal lying on the ground with the head of a cow. An X user named DAMIADENUGA uploaded this video to their account on July 8, 2024, with the caption, "What animal is this?" Within two days, the viral video had garnered 463K views, 913 comments, 590 reposts, and 1.3K likes.
Another User shared it with the Hindi text “समुद्री गाय आपने लोगो ने देखी हैं मैने तो पहली बार देखी हैं”. In English it means " Have you ever seen a sea cow ? I have seen it for the first time ?
Geezliberia, a news and media organization, shared the key frame of the viral video on their Instagram page. In the post, Geezliberia mentioned: “How is this possible? A hybrid-like creature that looks like a cow and has the body of a seal was captured by some fishermen. Everyone out here is wondering how possible this can be?”
Fact Check: We found the claim is false, the head part of the creature in the viral video is AI generated.
When we took the key frame and tested it in an AI detection tool “is it AI”, we found that there is probability of 90% to be generated by AI.
Shaun George PEPE, a YouTube channel, which mostly uploads content relating to AI, uploaded the same viral video on their channel with the title “Ai is good but way we use is really bad #ai #viralvideo #shortvideo.
During the reverse image run search, we found a similar video uploaded by an X user but instead of the seal body, we found a Tiger face and skin in it. In the comment section, we found the same user mentioned “Guys use AI to create different fake morphs these days just for impressions”.
When we searched for the keyword sea cow, we found “Sci Show” uploaded a documentary on their YouTube Channel with the title “Life as a Sea Cow”. By watching the video, it is proven that the creature we found in the viral video is not a sea cow.
Hence, we found the claim is false. Although we could not verify the location and details of the real video, our investigation revealed that the head part of the creature was generated using AI tools.
