Fact Check: Video of PM Narendra Modi’s grand welcome is not related to G7 Summit in Italy, it is from his Sydney visit in 2023

After being elected as the Prime Minister for the third consecutive time, Modi made his first foreign trip to attend the G7 Summit in Italy. In addition to India, Italy invited leaders from 11 developing nations across Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific region to participate in the summit.

Following PM Modi's recent trip, a video surfaced on social media claiming to show his grand welcome in Italy. The video, widely shared across different platforms, was captioned: "This is how Modiji was welcomed in Pappu's grandmother's country Italy yesterday."

Fact Check: We found the claim to be false. An old video from Sydney, Australia, has been shared to falsely depict PM Modi's grand welcome in Italy.

When we searched for Modi's visit to Italy, we found that he recently interacted with other powerful leaders during his G7 visit.





Additionally, a highlights video of the G7 Summit was shared on Narendra Modi's official account with the caption, "An important G7 Summit, where I presented India’s perspective on the world stage. Here are the highlights."



However, we did not find any event depicted in the viral video in any of the posts.

During the reverse image search, we found the same event video, captured from different angles, shared on Narendra Modi's official YouTube channel on May 23, 2023. The video was uploaded with the title “Festive fervour in Sydney as PM Modi and PM Albanese arrive at Qudos Bank Stadium!”.

In the video, PM Modi interacts & enters into an event with Australia PM Anthony Albanese.

We found similarities with the viral video. Furthermore, when we searched for Modi's visit to Sydney in 2023, we found a 1-hour 24-minute video uploaded on Narendra Modi's YouTube channel on the same date, titled “PM Modi attends Mega community programme in Sydney, Australia.”

After observing the video, we found multiple similarities with the viral video.




 The Australian PM shared a media release “Official visit to Australia by the Prime Minister of India “

We found PM Modi shared a few pictures of the event during his visit. The photographs of the event are very similar with the viral video.



We also found some more photographs from narendramodi.in archive. It proves that all the photographs at the event are similar to those shared on the viral video. In the archive, it was also mentioned that Prime Minister Modi interacted with the Indian community in Sydney, Australia.

On May 23, 2023, NDTV published an article with a headline “Grand Welcome for PM Modi by Indian Community in Sydney".


Hence, we found the claim is false. The viral video is an old one and has no link to the recent G7 Summit in Italy. This video was captured during Modi’s visit to Sydney, Australia.
