Fact Check: Video showing Rahul Gandhi taking pledge makes a false claim that he resigned from the Congress
A 30-sec video shared on social media shows Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reading out from a paper in Hindi: “मैं राहुल गाँधी , आज कांग्रेस से इस्तीफा दे रहा हूं , मुझसे और चुनावी हिंदू बनने का ढोंग नहीं होगा । अन्याय यात्रा के बाद न्याय पत्र भी निकला, लेकिन मोदी जी भ्रष्टाचारियों को जेल भेज रहे हैं । अब मोदी राज में हम सब भ्रष्टाचारियों को जेल भेज दिआ जायेगा I इस लिये मैं अपने नाना के घर इटली जा रहा हूं। ”.
When translated, it reads: “I, Rahul Gandhi, am resigning from the Congress. I am tired of being a Hindu for the sake of elections. I did the Anyay yatra and also released the Nyaya patra, but Modi keeps sending corrupt people to jail. Under his leadership, we will also be sent to jail for being corrupt. That is why I am going to my grandfather’s house to Italy.”
Several social media users shared it with different comments. However, most of them mentioned -- who did it? Don’t know whether this video is true or edited”
Fact check: The claim is false. In the clip, audio is manipulated. In the original video, Rahul is taking pledge to file nomination from the Wayanad constituency.
When we searched “Rahul Gandhi Resigning from Congress”, we didn’t get any positive result.
When we performed Google reverse image search, we found that on April 3, 2024, Rahul Gandhi shard the same video on his social media account. In the post, he mentioned “Wayanad is my home, and the people of Wayanad are my family. From them, I have learned a great deal over the last five years and received an abundance of love and affection. It is with great pride and humility that I file my nomination for Lok Sabha 2024 once again from this beautiful land.”
While going through the video which was shared by Rahul, he is found to be taking the pledge in English: "I, Rahul Gandhi, having been nominated as a candidate to fill a seat in the House of the People, do solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India.”
When we searched "Rahul Gandhi Filling Nomination for Wayanad Constituency", we got several publications, they published it with the same photographs & the video also.
On April 3, 2024, The Hindu shared a video on their social media account with a caption “Congress leader #RahulGandhi submitting nomination papers to #Wayanad district collector Renu Raj on Wednesday”.
As per Hindustan Times “Rahul Gandhi's 1st reaction after filing nomination from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat: ‘Will not rest until…’
Also, India Today while publishing the news, shared the video with a caption: “‘I, Rahul Gandhi…’: Watch Congress leader filing nomination from Wayanad”
Hence, the claim is false; the audio of the viral clip is manipulated. In the original video, Rahul Gandhi took the pledge to uphold the Constitution with which the submission process concluded and his nomination papers were given to Returning Officer, the district collector of Wayanad.
