Fact Check: Video showing school children crossing a river risking their lives is not from India

Heavy rains have been lashing various parts of India causing widespread flooding, forcing evacuation of several people. Social media is filled with images and videos showing flooding in many prominent cities. Meanwhile, a video shows a group of children wearing school uniforms, taking risk and crossing the river using a pulley cable. This video is shared with a caption in Hindi: “सरकार ने जितनी ताकत कावड़ यात्रा पर लगाई है काश कि थोड़ा सा ध्यान इन स्कूल जाते बच्चों के रास्ते के लिए भी दे देते।” When translated, it claims: “The government should put in a little effort in providing a good road to these schoolchildren than put all of its efforts in the Kawad Yatra.”





Fact Check:

The claim is False. The video is from Nepal.

When we extracted the keyframe from the video and used it to perform a Google reverse image search, we found a YouTube video showing the same visuals with the narration stating that the video is from Nepal.

We also found that the video published by an Instagram account with the caption “The daily struggle of Nepal school students”

We also found a Facebook page named Free Documentary, which published a longer video with the title “Most Dangerous Ways of School I Nepal I Free Documentary”.

The description goes: “Those who attend school in the mountain village of Kumpur, walk across the mountains of the highest situated country on earth. Although their families constantly ask themselves if the promise of an education justifies the danger of the path involved, they send their children day after day to school. #FreeDocumentary #MostDangerousWaysToSchool #Nepal #Education #School

We also found the IMDb page, which states that the video is one of the episodes of a documentary series named ‘The Most Dangerous Ways to School’.

The viral video was also debunked in May 2024 when it was viral with the claim that it showed the plight of school students from Kerala. Hence, the viral video is a part of an episode of a documentary showing school students from Nepal crossing a river using a cable car bridge. The claim that the video is from India is False.
