Fact Check: Viral collage alerting Hindus on Biryani Jihad has unrelated images, hence false

A collage of images is being shared virally by several social media users with a claim that a few Muslim shopkeepers were arrested because they supplied biryani spiked with impotency pills to control the population of Hindus.

Social media users are sharing a collage of images with the claim that in Coimbatore, Muslim shopkeepers are supplying biryani spiked with impotency pills. And that these shopkeepers have been arrested by the police as seen in the images. The images shared are old and unrelated, no such incident has occurred in Coimbatore.

The claim in Telugu goes as “*కోయంబత్తూరులో బిర్యానీలో గర్భనిరోధక మాత్రలు కలిపి హిందువులకు... ముస్లింలు బిర్యానీ సరఫరా చేస్తున్నారు. అమ్మిన ముస్లిం దుకాణదారులు అరెస్ట్, ఇక నుంచి హిందువులు గౌరవంగా పిల్లలు పుట్టకపోవడానికి కారణం ఏంటో అర్థమైందా?ముస్లిం షాపుల్లో బిర్యానీ తింటే ఎలాంటి ప్రభావం ఉంటుందో..*”

When translated, it claims: “*In Coimbatore, Muslims are selling biryani laced with birth control pills to Hindus. Muslim shopkeepers who sold were arrested, do you understand the reason why Hindus will not have children from now onwards and also the effect of eating biryani in Muslim shops..*”

The claim is false. Unrelated pictures are in circulation with a false claim.

Image 1:

When we performed Google reverse image search, we found that this image was first shared by Bijnor Police on its Twitter account on July 11, 2019. The image shows police arresting 6 accused of smuggling illegal weapons.

The caption on the tweet is “थाना शेरकोट @bijnorpolice द्वारा मदरसे में अवैध शस्त्रों की तस्करी करते 06 अभियुक्तगण 01 पिस्टल, 04 तमंचे व भारी मात्रा में कारतूसों सहित गिरफ्तार। #uppolice @Uppolice @adgzonebareilly @digmoradabad @News18India

When translated, it states: “Police station Sherkot @bijnorpolice arrested 06 accused smuggling illegal weapons from a madrasa along with 01 pistol, 04 country-made guns, and a large quantity of cartridges. #uppolice @Uppolice @adgzonebareilly @digmoradabad @News18India

Using Google reverse image search, we were able to find the article published in May 2019 in Daily Mirror Sri Lanka, according to which two people were arrested by the STF in Sri Lanka. There are more images in the article which prove that the image is from Sri Lanka. This image has no relation to the claim.

When we searched for the viral image using reverse image search, we found that the image is a thumbnail of a YouTube video published in July 2016. The channel is named Videosmylive – Indian Style. The title of the video is “Indian Muslim Festival DUM BIRYANI Preparation for 30 People & STREET FOOD”

Cybercrime police registered a case against the Twitter handles for sharing fake posts with the same claim in May 2023. The posts were shared with the caption ‘Biryani Jihad’ in Coimbatore.
