A 29-second duration video showing a few boys beating up a girl is in circulation on Facebook and Twitter with a claim that the Hindu boys are thrashing burqa-clad Muslim girl in India and because of their Sanghi (pro-Hindu) mentality they are thrashing the poor girl brutally for wearing a hijab.
The claim in Hindi goes “ये किसी कॉलेज का वीडियो है ,
When translated, it reads: “This is a video from some college, and this is such a college where Hindu boys and girls study together. See here how the boys with Sanghi mentality behave with the girls wearing hijab, would you still like to get admission for your sister and daughter in such a college where Hindu boys and girls study together?”
Fact Check:
The claim is false. The video is from Indonesia and dates back to the year 2020.
When the key frames extracted from the video were searched using Google, we found several news articles published by Indonesian websites.
We found an article in jabar.tribunnews.com, where the original YouTube video was shared with a narrative. The article confirms that the video was shot and the incident took place in a junior high school in Indonesia.
According to Suara.com, three male students bullied a female student at a junior high school in Purworejo Regency, Central Java. The girl who was bullied is said to be studying at Muhammadiyah Middle School. The video went viral on social media, after which the boys seen in the video were arrested by the authorities.
According to bogor.Tribunnews.com, the incident took place on February 13, 2020. The video was first posted by a Facebook user, in which we can see the boys slapping, hitting, and also kicking the girl in hijab. Purworejo deputy chief of police, Commissioner Andis Arfan Tofani confirmed the incident took place in Muhammadiyah School in Purworejo, Indonesia.
Hence, the viral video does not show Hindu (Sanghi) boys beating up a hijab-clad Muslim girl. There is no communal angle to it. The video is from Indonesia shot in the year 2020. The claim is FALSE.
