Fact Check: Viral video claiming to show Palestinian kids searching for burnt food after Israeli airstrikes is FALSE

Meanwhile, a video showing kids rummaging the remnants in burnt areas and digging out packaged food material is going viral with the claim that it shows kids in Palestine searching for burnt food after the airstrikes by Israel.

It is shared virally on all platforms of social media with the same claim.

Fact Check:

The claim is False. The video is a few months old and shows the plight of children when the fire broke out in a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon.

When we performed a reverse image search using the key frames extracted from the video, we found that the viral video was shared on TikTok by a handle @moumentaleb on July 21, 2023.

Here is the snapshot of the video shared on TikTok.


The translation of the captions in Arabic states “#Fire #lebanon Fire in the Syrian Camp in Hanin AL-Minya”.

When searched using keywords, we found a few articles about the massive fire at a Syrian refugee camp in northern Lebanon. The blaze quickly spread throughout the camp amid an extreme heatwave. Several tents burned down, but no human casualties were reported. The Lebanese Civil Defense quickly arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the flames.

According to middleeastmonitor.com, a huge fire broke out in a camp for displaced Syrians in the town of Hanine, in Northern Lebanon, destroying a large number of tents. Fire fighters rushed to the scene and there were no reports of casualties.

We also found a video report by Aljazeera Mubasher shared by July 21, 2023 with the title "شقانا كله راح خسرت كل شي"..حريق يلتهم مخيمًا للاجئين السوريين في لبنان

The title roughly translates to “Our whole division is gone, I lost everything, fire devours a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon.” The video shares interviews of the people in the camp who lost everything in the fire.

Hence, the viral video of children rummaging through remnants on burnt ground and digging out packaged food material is not from Gaza due to Israeli airstrikes. The video is from July 2023 when a Syrian Refugee camp was gutted in fire. The claim is False.
