Fact Check: Woman traveling abroad with Rahul Gandhi is not Amrit Singh, but a Congress leader’s wife

The leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited the US from September 8 to September 10, 2024. He was welcomed by Sam Pitroda, Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, and members of the Indian diaspora. He visited Dallas, Washington DC where he interacted with academicians, students, and community people. He made statements about issues like caste and quota system in India. He reiterated his demand for a caste census and to know the economic situation of the lower castes.
Meanwhile, an image of Rahul Gandhi, with luggage and trolley bags, probably outside an airport, is shared virally on social media with the claim that the woman seen next to him is Amrit Singh, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s daughter, who worked for the Open Society Justice Initiative. The woman is also seen with the luggage and there is another man also seen in the picture. The users shared this viral image with the caption “Hi #RaulVinci. Where were you travelling with Amrit Singh, Director, Accountability, Liberty and Transparency of Open Society Justice Initiative - a project funded by George Soros?”
Fact Check:
The claim is False. The woman seen in the viral picture is not Amrit Singh, daughter of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
When we searched the viral image using Google reverse image search, we found a few reports published on news websites in October 2023. We also found that an image was shared virally trolling Rahul Gandhi with captions such as “Why @rahulgandhi left the country secretly and why Uzbekistan?”
According to an article published in freepressjournal, Trolls on X (Twitter) shared images of the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seen in a green T-shirt and claimed that he was on a sudden visit to Uzbekistan. The trolls were asking about the woman in the brown shirt. The article states that Rahul was with his childhood friend Amitabh Dubey and Amitabh’s wife, Amulya. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate took to Twitter and hit out the trolls.
We also found Supriya Shrinate’s post which stated that the gentleman in the picture is Rahul Gandhi’s childhood friend Amitabh Dubey and the lady is Amitabh’s wife, Amulya.
We also found another post on X sharing the information that Amitabh Dubey is the son of Suman Dubey who was the board member of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and press advisor of former PM Rajiv Gandhi.
Therefore, the viral image in circulation does not show Amrit Singh, daughter of former PM Manmohan Singh, and it is not related to his recent travel to the USA. The claim is False.
