Andhra Pradesh to sell sand directly to people

Jagan Mohan Reddy

In a delayed decision, the AP government had decided to sell the sand directly to the people, avoiding contractors and others. The ruling YSR Congress, which had been accusing the Telugu Desam Party of looting the sand during the last five years, had pulled out all contractors and the political party leaders from the sand mining. After a review meeting on Thursday, chief minister Jaganmohan Reddy had directed the AP Mineral Development Corporation to identify the sand reaches across the State and get ready to sell it from September 5.

The chief minister had also directed the officials to arrange sand stock yards in all towns and cities for easy transportation of the people. The sand would also be available for booking and online payment through a portal and mobile application. The Mineral Development Corporation would develop both the portal and mobile application before September 5.

The State government has taken serious note of the flaws of the previous government where the ruling party legislators were involved in sand mining. Though the State government had made sand free for the people, the politicians have made huge money out of it in the last five years. The YSR Congress leaders, including chief minister Jaganmohan Reddy, have accused the TDP of encouraging sand mafia. They cited the incident of Denduluru MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar of looting sand from the district and his alleged involvement in the physical attack on woman Thasildar Vanajakshi.

Now, Jaganmohan Reddy had removed the political and others involvement and directly assigned the task to the Mineral Development Corporation. The officials were asked to geotag all the sand reaches and the vehicles carrying sand from the reach to the beneficiary. These vehicles would be closely monitored by the officials. The sand reaches and the sand stockyards would also be under CCTV surveillance to prevent unauthorised activities. The chief minister had directed the officials to come up with action plan for the proposed new sand policy.

The chief minister had also directed the officials to ensure that sand is made available to the people at the lowest possible price and at the shortest possible time. It is to be seen how the AP Mineral Development Corporation would design the network.
