The on-going electoral battle in Andhra Pradesh is unfolding surprises to the voters with every passing day. There are surprise entries of politicians and freshers as well in one party or the other.
The biggest surprise was actor K Nagababu joining Jana Sena and giving his acceptance to contest Narasapuram Lok Sabha constituency from West Godavari district. Nagababu, the elder brother of Jana Sena founder Pawan Kalyan, had made his political debut now, after four years of the formation of the party, for the reasons best known to him. He did not make his political entry when his elder brother K Chiranjeevi found Praja Rajyam Party and contested the 2009 elections. He did not join active politics when his younger brother Pawan Kalyan found Jana Sena in 2014 and did not come to him when the Jana Sena started working to contest the 2019 elections. But, he joined the active politics and is now the party candidate for the Narasapuram Lok Sabha constituency, where the ruling Telugu Desam Party is struggling to find a candidate after its candidate Raghurama Krishnam Raju joined the Opposition YSR Congress and sitting BJP MP Gokaraju Gangaraju refused to join the TDP. There were efforts to rope in Gangaraju’s son into the TDP but that too did not work for the TDP. The ruling party is faced in the bottom in this Parliament constituency this time, perhaps which prompted Jana Sena to bring in Nagababu to contest this seat against the YSR Congress.
Meanwhile, there was a big surprise for Jana Sena when Nandyal sitting MP and industrialist S P Y Reddy joined the party. Reddy had won the Nandyal MP seat in 2014 on YSR Congress and switched over to the TDP even before counting was completed. Since then, he had been with the TDP and sought party tickets to his family members this time as he had planned to retire from active politics due to his health problems. However, the TDP did not honour his request forcing him to quit the TDP. It is said that he wanted to contest the election as independent and disturb the TDP’s electoral prospects. However, he had changed his mind in the last minute and had joined the Jana Sena. It is to be seen if Jana Sena would honour his request and field his family members in Kurnool district or not.
There was some surprise for the TDP as Congress leader from Rayalaseema, Byreddi Rajasekhar Reddy, had returned to the party. Rajasekhar Reddy’s entry into the TDP will have some adverse impact on the Congress in the region and some gains for the TDP.
