The Election Commission had finally cleared the appointment of senior IPS officer A B Venkateswara Rao as the DGP of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The post was held by DGP R P Thakur prior to the election. The EC had removed the DGP from the post during the election and had temporarily assigned the task to another senior IPS officer S B Bagchi.
Venkateswara Rao was the State intelligence DG before the election. The EC had transferred him from the post on the charge that he was helping the ruling Telugu Desam Party. The TDP had made hue and cry on this transfer and made the chief secretary Anil Chandra Punetha to issue GO cancelling Venkateswara Rao’s appointment. Irked at this development, the EC had removed Punetha from the chief secretary post and appointed senior IAS officer L V Subrahmanyam in his place. Subrahmanyam was kept aside by the TDP government for his connections with the YSR family.
Now, after the polling, the EC had cleared the appointment of Venkateswara Rao as the DG for the ACB, a prime post for the officer, but it was too late for the TDP to have its officer in the limelight. It is alleged that the TDP had made clandestine arrangements for the polls with the active planning of Venkateswara Rao some one-and-a-half years ago. This IPS officer had prepared the poll management for the TDP by identifying the officers and senior employees to be the returning officers, assistant returning officers, presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and booth level officers who were expected to work in favour of the ruling party. The task given to them was to see that the polling was held in favour of the TDP, despite the anti-incumbency factor.
However, Venkateswara Rao’s removal from the post had delinked this network for the TDP, it is alleged. The plans did not work for the ruling party as the network created by the TDP and this senior IPS officer was disconnected.
Now, as the fate of the parties and the candidates is sealed in the EVMs which are kept in the strong rooms, the EC had cleared the appointment of Venkateswara Rao bringing him to the mainstream administration. It is to be seen how the TDP reacts or the senior IPS officer, known to be TDP-friendly, acts in his new post.
