The Telugu Desam Party faced humiliating defeat in the 2019 general election. Its strength had come down from 102 in the 2014 general elections to just 23 this time, including Chandrababu Naidu, in the 175-member Assembly. The TDP, after the 2014 bifurcation had campaigned extensively in the State on its plans for the new or the residuary State. The targets included building a world class capital city, investment mobilisation and completion of the Polavaram Project were the major targets of the TDP government in the last five years.
Chandrababu Naidu went around the world for investment mobilisation and had even brought the global investors to the State at the three investors meets held at Visakhapatnam. Chandrababu Naidu also brought in globally renowned architects, Norman and Fosters, to design the capital’s administrative buildings of Secretariat, Assembly and High Court. He had roped in Singapore government to plan the entire capital city. He started some works in the capital, claimed to have completed 70 per cent of the Polavaram Project and talked big about his investment mobilisation of around Rs 17,000 crore. He sought his continuation in the government for another term to complete these works or at least to continue them. He was sure of completing Polavaram and Amaravati in these five years and wanted people vote him to power.
But, things were different for the people. They gave him a humiliating defeat in the elections. Made him to sit in opposition leaving the Polavaram, Amaravati and others to Jaganmohan Reddy. The irony is that Chandrababu Naidu had lost both Tadikonda and Mangalagiri assembly constituencies, which form part of the capital. Ever since the defeat, Chandrababu Naidu had been asking people why he was given such a humiliating defeat and he is at loss to understand his mistakes for the defeat. Surprisingly, his party leaders have given him the answer the other day, on Vinayaka Chaviti, when Tadikonda MLA Undavalli Sridevi visited one of the Vinayaka pandals to offer prayers. They made casteist remarks against her stating that Lord Vinayaka would become desecrated if the Dalit MLA offered prayers. This comment came from the TDP leaders, who belong to the caste that had dominated the entire state in the last five years and had tried to keep the capital in its grip. Such was the power that this single caste wielded against the rest of the castes in the State and that was the reason why the TDP had to face such a humiliating defeat.
This caste discrimination and domination was more in Amaravati, the capital villages, besides in other parts of the State, which rallied the people of every other caste against the TDP. What the MLA faced and felt the other day was felt and faced by the people in the last five years. Hope TDP will change its casteist politics at least from now if it wanted to survive.
