Chiru-Jagan meet, speculations high

The political corridors are busy now discussing about the meeting between Megastar Chiranjeevi and chief minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy at the latter’s residence on Monday. The two had lunch with spouses and greeted each other.

This was the first meeting between the two leaders, even before Chiranjeevi entered politics with Praja Rajyam Party in the 2009 elections. While Chiranjeevi merged his party with the Congress and continued in the Congress politics, Jaganmohan Reddy walked out of the Congress and formed the YSR Congress. Since then, the two leaders never met, even at the informal occasions.

Four months after Jaganmohan Reddy’s victory, the film star had paid a curtesy visit. However, this curtesy visit is seen from the political angel as there is high speculation that former minister and Telugu Desam Party legislator Ganta Srinivasa Rao is planning to quit TDP. It is said that Ganta is also involved in some land scam in Visakhapatnam about which the State government is probing.

The chief minister had reportedly told the former minister to resign to the Assembly post if he wanted to join the ruling YSR Congress. Once he resigns, the burden of ensuring the victory of the YSR Congress will be given to him and only then, his candidature would be considered for the MLC post.

Even if Ganta prefers to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, it is for sure that Jaganmohan Reddy would get him disqualified by Speaker Thammineni Seetaram, who is also opposed to the floor crossing. However, it is said that Ganta is not prepared to lose his MLA post just to join the BJP, which has no strength in the State politics.

It is for these two reasons, the political circles say, that Chirajeevi had met Jaganmohan Reddy and sought some favourable decision. However, it is not known what Jaganmohan Reddy had suggested in this case.
