Jagan gets an edge

YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy received an edge over his rival – Telugu Desam Party – by making a statement on the possible TDP-Congress alliance in the next elections. He had given this statement two days ago shaking the ruling party leadership.

There is visible resentment in the TDP over Chandrababu Naidu’s plans to have an electoral understanding with the Congress. The TDP cadre and the voters in the booth level, who matter the most when it comes to vote, are not happy with the party chief’s plans. There is a three-decade old battle at the grassroots between the voters of the TDP and the Congress and it is not as easy for them to patch up as Chandrababu Naidu does at the top level.

The Congress voters, who have shifted to TDP in 2014, just because of the bifurcation, are now looking back at the YSR Congress. This had put Jaganmohan Reddy in advantage in terms of votes as not many of them go to the TDP this time as they did in 2014, which was an emotional move against the Congress.

Interestingly, the Congress top leaders from the State too are not interested in having alliance with the TDP. Instead, they are preferring alliance with the Jana Sena and the Left parties. In fact, several senior leaders, including APCC president Raghuveera Reddy have already given enough indications to forge alliance with Jana Sena along with the CPI and the CPM. But, the Congress national leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi is said to be in favour of alliance with Chandrababu Naidu than Pawan Kalyan.

The Congress leaders who met in Vijayawada the other day refused to talk about alliance with TDP. Even the AICC general secretary and AP in-charge, Oommen Chandy, chose to be silent on the alliance and had said that their target as of now was to rebuild the party in the State. Earlier, Chandy had said that there would be no alliance with any party in the State for the next elections. However, in politics, nothing is permanent and equations keep changing as the need arises.

But, there is a clear understanding between the TDP and Congress, as far as AP is concerned, where Chandrababu Naidu is willing to fund at least in 25 Assembly seats for the Congress. Some leaders like Nadendla Manohar and N Tulasi Reddy are in touch with Chandrababu Naidu on this count.
