Telugu Desam Party supremo and AP chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is playing a key role in the national politics, particularly to ensure the defeat of prime minister Narendra Modi. He is more active now than ever and is more vocal now against Modi than anyone. He is touring the States to campaign against Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is more determined to see Narendra Modi out of power than anyone else in the national politics.
There are two camps now in the national politics – the NDA camp led by BJP and the UPA camp led by the Congress. But, there are some other parties which are keeping equal distance to these two camps. While the Left continues to be away from the UPA, there are other parties like Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Rastriya Janata Dal, National Conference and a few others, which are neither with the NDA nor with the UPA. It is here Chandrababu Naidu is trying to bring these individual parties closer to the Congress-led UPA this time. Though he had planned a larger and new front by dissolving the UPA, things seem to have not worked in his favour and thus he is forced to sail with the Congress, while he continues to be in touch with leaders like Mamatha Benerji.
In West Bengal, Chandrababu Naidu campaigned for Mamatha Benerji for two days. Though he was in West Bengal for two days, he had a long one-to-one meeting with Congress president Rahul Gandhi, before leaving for Kolkata. In West Bengal, the TDP chief spoke so great about the leadership of Mamatha Benerji and her impending role in Delhi after this election. This would mean that he is proposing her candidature for the prime minister post. If so, then Chandrababu Naidu should convince Rahul Gandhi to keep off from the top slot for five years.
In this process, Chandrababu Naidu had proposed a national level opposition parties meeting in New Delhi on May 21 to decide the next prime minister candidate. He spoke to several leaders on this and is almost made up his mind to make this event a bigger one. But, to his surprise, Mamatha Benerji had ruled out the possibility of this meeting as she wanted to be present in the State keeping an eye on the EVMs kept in the strong rooms. So, what Chandrababu Naidu will do next is a big question.
