Mayawati gives a big blow to Opposition unity

Uttar Pradesh former chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati had given a big blow to the efforts of Opposition parties unity at the national level against the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Opposition parties including the Congress are on a mission to defeat Modi in the next elections and have been preparing the ground for a united fight against BJP and Modi.

At this point, Mayawati declared that her party would go alone in Madhya Pradesh and will have electoral tie-up with regional party, Janata Congress, in Chhattisgarh, elections for which are due in December-January. The two States are important for the Opposition to defeat BJP and Modi at the national level.

Madhya Pradesh has 230 seats in the State Assembly while Chhattisgarh has 90 seats. Mayawati said that her party would contest all the 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh and will share 35 seats in Chhattisgarh with the Janata Congress. In Chhattisgarh, Janata Congress is headed by former chief minister and tribal leader, Ajit Jogi, who left the Congress a few years ago.

BJP is placed strong in the two states and Mayawati’s plans have weakened the Opposition unity against Modi. Not caring for the plans of the Opposition unity, the BSP’s chief had taken a call to pull out and prove her strength in the two States. She had even declared Ajit Jogi as the chief minister candidate for the alliance in Chhattisgarh, giving a major shock to the Congress, which plans to grab the seat in alliance here.

Jogi’s Janata Congress would contest 55 Assembly seats and be the leading partner of the alliance while BSP will share 35 seats. This would mean a triangular contest in Chhattisgarh with the Congress-led Opposition, BJP-led ruling combine and Joig-Mayawati team fighting the battle.

Mayawati is having her own plans to have her own alliance partners to build a third alternative at the national level. She is now having thoughts on staking her claim for the Prime Minister seat with the allies backing her. If her plans in Chhattisgarh work out in Chhattisgarh, she might have the same for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and other States where she can find equal partners from among the regional parties to back her candidature for the PM slot.
