Minister Sravan quits AP cabinet

As expected, Minister for Tribal Welfare, Kidari Sravan Kumar, had resigned from AP Cabinet on Thursday. He met Minister for IT and Panchayat Raj, Nara Lokesh, before submitting his resignation in the chief minsiter’s office, as chief minister Chandrababu Naidu was unavailable. He formally handed over the resignation letter to the senior officials of the CMO.

His resignation was necessitated as he had completed six months in office without being a member of the Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council as stipulated in the constitution. He was inducted into the cabinet on December 10, 2018 and was required to be a member of either of the Houses in six months. The ruling Telugu Desam Party expected that the Election Commission would hold by-election to the Araku Assembly seat which fell vacant after the sitting MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao was killed by the Maoists. However, as the EC prepared for general elections, the by-election was deferred and thus Sravan Kumar could not make it to the Assembly.

Sravan Kumar, the eldest son of Sarveswara Rao was picked up by Chandrababu Naidu to represent the STs in his cabinet, which had no place for them since June 2014. Finally, on May 9, without being a member of Assembly or Council, Sravan Kumar had to quit the cabinet. The sources said that the chief minister would forward the letter to Governor ESL Narasimhan on Friday, which would be formally accepted.

Sravan Kumar, the youngest member of the AP Cabinet, was the second minister in the AP politics to quit the Cabinet after serving for six months without being member of either House. It was late Nandamuri Harikrishna, who was minister for transport in 1995 in Chandrababu Naidu government. After six months, Harikrishna had quit the cabinet as he could not make it to the Assembly or Council. He was never given the chance to come back. Sravan Kumar is now contesting the Araku Assembly constituency, results of which would be out only on May 23.
