The Telugu Desam Party is losing one leader after the other to the Bharatiya Janata Party these days. It had suffered heavily when three of its five MPs from Rajya Sabha crossed the fence and joined the BJP. The suffering continues with the leaders leaving the party and joining the BJP.
The other day, there were a few important leaders who left the TDP and joined the BJP, even as party supremo Chandrababu Naidu was addressing media promising to protect the party. Former minister Sanakkayala Aruna from Guntur and former MLC Vakati Narayana Reddy from Nellore are the prominent leaders who have left the TDP and joined the BJP.
The defection of MPs Y S Chowdary and C M Ramesh was a great loss to the TDP in terms of its image. The two leaders were said to be the eyes and ears of Chandrababu Naidu in the last 10 years. They played key role in the party from 2009 to 2019, a decade, financing the party activities in support of Chandrababu Naidu. They stood like rocks for Naidu, particularly from 2009 to 2014, when the party was in opposition.
While it is said that Chandrababu Naidu himself had sent these two key leaders to the BJP as a political cover to him and his party from the BJP at the Centre and the YSR Congress in the State. Naidu is finding going tough these days with the BJP in the national politics and the YSR Congress in the State politics trying to eliminate the opposition. The BJP, particularly the Amit Shah-Narendra Modi combine, is leaving no stone unturned to empty the opposition parties and even going for the witch-hunt and victimisation politics.
Cases are being filed and leaders are being sent to jails. The top leaders of the Congress are in jail these days and it is what mostly worries Chandrababu Naidu, the observers say. It is to be seen what Naidu would do as the leaders walk out of his party and join the BJP, leaving him alone.
