Telugu Desam Party supremo and chief minister Chandrababu Naidu had given a rude shocker to the Congress leaders in Andhra Pradesh who have pinned all their hopes on making it to the Assembly this time with the TDP alliance. He went all the way to New Delhi and met Congress president Rahul Gandhi, where he broke the alliance in the State, but promised to back the Congress at the national level.
Chandrababu Naidu had his own reasons to break the alliance with the Congress. It did not work for him in Telangana where the party lost 11 out of 13 Assembly seats that it contested. The Congress vote did not help him as it failed to transfer for his party. On the other hand, the TDP’s vote went for the Congress giving some good seats in Khammam district. Naidu fears this and had given up the alliance in the State elections. He is now looking forward to the Jana Sena for tie-up, which might take a month or so for him to materialise.
The Congress leaders have finally declared that they would go alone in the State contesting all the 175 Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats. That was a painful decision for some of the party leaders who were looking for electoral benefits in alliance with the TDP. They were upset with the news and it might take some more days for them to come to terms with the facts.
The Congress is now setting its house in order, trying to pick-up the candidates for the elections. The party AICC general secretary and AP incharge Oomen Chandy had asked the rank and file of the party to take positions in every Assembly constituency and give their best to the party. AP Congress president, who chaired the party’s executive committee meeting in Vijayawada, asked the leaders to go to the people with a slogan of special category status to the State. He wanted them to go to the people aggressively promising the SCS to the State so that the party can win the people.
