Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu continued to be worried about the possibility of the EVMs being tampered. Though the EVMs are safe in the strong rooms, he is worried if they can be re-programmed and the votes can be changed against his party.
Speaking to media persons in his residence on Monday, Chandrababu Naidu said that the machine (EVM) which was programmed by one expert can be re-programmed by another expert. “People have voted for us (TDP) in large numbers. They have come from distance places and waited in queues at the polling booths for hours and cast their votes. But, what is the guarantee that these votes are changed against us (TDP) as the EVMs can be managed even with a remote,” he asked.
He took an exception to the YSR Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders for celebrating their victory based on the predictions of the exit polls. He said that the exit polls are just the views of a sample collection of the entire voters and if these two parties are now celebrating the predictions, he was doubtful about the genuineness of the EVMs. “Did they change the votes cast in the EVMs and celebrating now,” he asked.
Naidu reiterated his demand for counting of the VVPAT slips along with the votes. “The EVMs can be tampered with and re-programmed, but not the VVPAT slips. So the demand for counting of 50 per cent of the VVPAT slips holds good,” he said. While admitting that he had promoted technology in administration and other fields, he expressed his doubts over the misuse of the same technology. “I strongly feel that the EVMs are managed and the votes that were cast on April 11 are not the same that are going to be counted on May 23,” Chandrababu Naidu quipped.
While Naidu and his TDP leaders continue to argue about the safety of the votes cast in the EVMs, the rivals say that the TDP leadership is slowly digesting the fact that they are going to be defeated. “Blaming the EVMs now is in a way admitting their defeat. It takes time for them to accept the peoples’ verdict. But, they are finding a reason to admit or accept their defeat,” is what the BJP and the YSR Congress leaders say.
