Rafale deal, a potential weapon for Congress

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government at the Centre is in a fix over the Rafale aircrafts deal. The Congress had taken up the issue accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of massive corruption. The deal gives enough teeth for the Congress to bite Modi as people are beginning to understand the deal.

The basic questions now people across are asking is the involvement of Anil Ambani in the deal as contractor who has no experience in the field and the denial of the contract to the public sector firm, Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) which had initiated the contract and which has several decades of experience in the field.

Though there are several other questions that are linked to the speed at which the deal was stuck or the money that is involved in it or the number of aircrafts ordered against the number required, the campaign across the country is going around the two questions – Anil Ambani’s role and HAL’s denial. The issue is snowballing into a major scam and has the potential to alter the powers at the elections. In away Rafale deal is like the Bofors deal of Rajiv Gandhi in 1980s.

The BJP leadership, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi should tell the nation why Anil Ambani was roped in though he had no experience in the field. It is a known fact that Modi is hand in glove with the Ambani brothers and is a close and trusted friend of this family.

Modi’s loyalty to the Ambani family, particularly the Ambani brothers, is the reason why the government had dropped the HAL from the contract in the Rafale aircrafts purchase for the Indian Army. The Modi government had committed several mistakes in executing the deal, if one goes into the details, as being explained by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi.

The Rafale deal adds up to the list of failures of Modi in the last four years. The list begins with the unearthing of the black money , the jobs, the demonetisation and the replacement of the planning commission with NITI Aayog. Now the Rafale deal comes and Modi would have to clear people or give justification on this, particularly on the involvement of Anil Ambani in the deal.
