Galla Arunakumari. The leader who used to call the shots in Chittoor district when Congress was in power. As a minister, she ruled not just her constituency but the entire district. However, the state’s division reversed the situation. She shrewdly switched loyalties to the TDP just before elections but this could not save her from the electoral defeat. However, she drew some solace with the victory of her son Galla Jayadev as Member of Parliament from Guntur. Galla Arunakumari is TDP incharge for Chandragiri assembly constituency, which is represented by YSRCP MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy.
However, Galla’s latest decision is said to have caused an uproar in the TDP. She has announced her resignation as Chandragiri incharge. She directly conveyed this to party president Chandrababu Naidu. Though Chandrababu tried to persuade her, she did not relent. She is learnt to have told Chandrababu that she has no patience to do politics and requested that she be relieved from this responsibility and somebody else may be nominated. Chandrababu had not anticipated this. Galla family has its influence in Chittoor district. Chandrababu is said to have reviewed the fallout of her decision with the district leaders of the party.
Galla Arunakumari’s family members say that she took the decision due to the age factor but this doesn’t look believable. Politics has nothing to do with age. Some people point out that leaders who crossed 70 are still active in AP politics. They point out that leaders like K E Krishna Murthy are competing with youth to take part in party and government programmes. It is being said that Galla is making a lame excuse and that she quit incharge’s post due to unhappiness with the TDP leadership.
In the last elections, Galla Arunakumari contested as TDP candidate and lost to YSRCP’s Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy with a margin of 4,000 votes. Bhaskar Reddy polled 1,00,924 votes while Galla Arunakumar secured 96,406 votes. Galla had made a hat-trick by winning this seat in 1999, 2004 and 2009. Analysts say since she had been representing the constituency for 15 years, this could have led to her defeat in the last elections. She believes she will definitely win the election this time but since she is not getting the cooperation from own party, she told Chandrababu that she is resigning as incharge. Overall, there are reports that Galla distanced herself from the party due to her unhappiness with the party chief.
