Sonia Gandhi had finally returned to the top job in the Congress, which she had left three years ago. The Congress Working Committee, had finally requested her to be the party’s interim chief as Rahul Gandhi refused to take the responsibility. The two months long uncertainty had finally resolved with Sonia Gandhi taking over the party reins, after the CWC meeting in Delhi.
Sonia Gandhi had retired from the party president post giving the mantle to her son Rahul Gandhi. He was made the party president three years ago and the party went for general elections in 2019. Under his leadership, the party faced a debacle across the country reducing its strength to the lowest ever in the Parliament. He had quit the party post immediately after the results were announced on May 23. Later, he wrote an open letter to the party CWC giving reasons for this resignation, where he accused some senior leaders of blackmailing him to get tickets for their political heirs, mostly the sons. He said that these senior leaders did not even work for the party as expected.
As Rahul Gandhi was democratic in the party affairs, the senior leaders took advantage of it and have tried to prevail upon Rahul Gandhi in his decisions. Several senior leaders, most of them spent-forces did not allow Rahul Gandhi to take decisions on his own. The Congress, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, could not make use of the anti-Modi wave among the opposition parties, which rallied together in Bengaluru and Kolkatta. He could not reach electoral understanding with Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and others to check the Bharatiya Janata Party, ahead of elections. The Congress could not bring all the anti-BJP and anti-Modi parties and the leaders together, only because of the indifferent attitude of the senior leaders who kept Rahul Gandhi in their hands. Resenting this, Rahul had resigned forcing now Sonia Gandhi to come back.
It is to be seen how Sonia Gandhi would keep the party move on fighting the BJP and Narendra Modi-Amit Shah combination
